diving the scuba junkie way

At Scuba Junkie we have high standards that are a given, no matter which SJ location you choose to visit. We have your safety as our top concern at all times. Our group sizes are a maximum of four divers per guide, and your guide will be a certified PADI Divemaster or Instructor. We organize all groups according to diving certification and experience level, so that everyone can get the most out of their dives.

Our care for the environment runs deep through the company, and we take great pride in our conservation work. We have responsible diving guidelines in place, which all our staff are trained to adhere to. We brief and encourage all guests to follow correct protocols and respect the marine environment.

Last but definitely not least – We’ll ensure you have great FUN on all your dives and our friendly crew will always be waiting for you at the end of the day to log your dives. You will arrive as a guest but leave as a member of the Scuba Junkie Family!

The chemicals in most suncreams are very harmful to reefs and contribute significantly to coral bleaching. We therefore require all divers and snorkellers to only use Reef Safe suncreams during their stay to protect the reefs for generations to come.

safety

We have a thorough emergency action plan in place, all our dive staff are trained in EFR and CPR and we have both oxygen and AED onsite for our trained staff to use in case of an emergency. Our equipment is well maintained, and serviced regularly, and our dive boats have all safety equipment you may need, including emergency oxygen and first aid kit. We conduct regular rescue simulations and refreshers to keep all staff up to date.

We have thorough Covid-19 safety measures in place to keep you & our staff safe and to ensure that you still have an amazing trip.

safety procedures

no fly time

We follow PADI's recommendations, of a minimum 18h no fly time. Our dives usually finish at 4pm latest, so the earliest you should book a departure flight is 10am on the day after you finish diving.

No Decompression Limits (NDL)

We do not allow decompression diving. If you have your own dive computer, we ask that you inform your dive guide when you have 10 minutes of NDL’s remaining so that they can start to shallow up and extend the bottom time for your group.

Nearest Hospital

The nearest hospital is located in Semporna, approximately 1 hour boat ride from our Mabul Beach Resort.

Nearest Recompression Chamber

There is a decompression chamber in the Navy Base between Semporna and Tawau and also one in Kota Kinabalu. Suspected cases will be taken to the hospital in Semporna and once evaluated by the doctor a decision will be made on the next course of action.

insurance

Insurance isn’t mandatory for diving in Sipadan, but we highly recommend it. Contact us to get DAN short term insurance rates

skills refresher

If you have not dived in a while then we offer a FREE skills refresher at the start of your first dive with us before you head off on your first dive, to make sure that you are feeling confident in the water.

dive boats

Our dive boats are 33ft fibreglass speed boats, equipped with twin engines for speed and safety. The maximum capacity is 12 guests and 3 staff members to ensure there is enough space and comfort for everyone. Boats are equipped with the latest safety equipment including life jackets, emergency oxygen, first aid kits and spare dive kits. If you break a mask or fin strap, or chomp through your mouthpiece, we’ve got you covered! We bring water, tea and snacks for all day trips.

Things you may want to bring onboard: a light weight towel or sarong, refillable water bottle, reef safe sunscreen. We recommend using a dry bag to keep your belongings from getting wet! Check out our Know before you go page for more planning tips!
